Cross River Gorilla Protection Program

Active

A community-led monitoring and anti-poaching initiative to save the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla in Nigeria.

The Cross River gorilla is one of the most endangered great apes in the world, with fewer than 250 individuals left in the wild. This project partners with local communities to establish community rangers, implement camera trap monitoring, and restore critical migration corridors.

Project Objectives

  • Train and equip 30 community rangers from local forest communities.
  • Deploy 50 satellite-linked camera traps to track gorilla family movements.
  • Establish a 5,000-hectare community forest reserve adjacent to the national park.

Impact Summary

By empowering the local community, anti-poaching patrols have increased by 80%, resulting in a significant decrease in illegal logging and hunting activity in the project zone.
